PNR transmission refers to the transfer of Passenger Name Records (PNR) over secure and reliable messaging channels. There are specific regulations to be followed for the collection, storage and transmission of PNR data to ensure that a passenger's personal information is not compromised at any stage of the process.
More about Passenger Name Records.
The Passenger Name Record (PNR) was initially introduced to allow airlines to share passenger information during interlining across multiple airlines. Standards were issued for the transfer of this data by IATA and ATA, forming the ATA/IATA Reservations Interline Message Procedures - Passenger (AIRIMP).
PNR data is collected during the booking process and can include several types of information:
Passenger data exchange will vary according to specific airline and destination country requirements.
Once the information is collected, it is stored securely within the Computer Reservations System (CRS) of the travel agency within a Global Distribution System or within a Master PNR in the CRS of the host airline, before being made available to the CRS of associated carrier airlines.
More about secure flight passenger data.
Some airlines may receive the entire PNR and others will receive only the portion of the PNR that will be managed by them - again, this will differ between airlines and will also remain dependent upon the method of ticket purchase.
The complex system of critical messaging is managed through a series of protocols and standards according to the security agreements between specific countries; each bearing its own set of regulations. Secure and reliable PNR transmission is of high importance when handling sensitive personal data.
